Former Zambian Police Chief Charity Katanga Sentenced to Three Years

In a courtroom packed with tension and emotion, former Deputy Inspector General of Police Charity Katanga faced the judgment of the Lusaka chief resident magistrate Davies Chiwbili. Despite impassioned pleas from her lawyers to avoid a custodial sentence, Katanga was handed a three-year jail term. The magistrate's decision sent shockwaves through the country's legal and law enforcement communities.

Magistrate Chiwbili's stern words underscored the gravity of the situation. The Magistrate emphasized the necessity of holding those in positions of authority accountable, stating that the punishment should serve as a stark reminder of the importance of honesty and integrity in leadership roles. 

The case against Katanga stemmed from allegations that she purchased 10 Higer buses worth K26 million using funds deemed to be proceeds of crime. Despite her lawyer Benjamin Mwelwa's arguments for leniency based on Katanga's service to the nation and her previously unblemished record, the magistrate concluded that the offense warranted a custodial sentence.

The impact of Katanga's actions on the reputation of the Zambia Police was a significant factor in the sentencing decision. Magistrate Chiwbili lamented that Katanga's misconduct tarnished the image of the police service, eroding public trust and confidence. Her actions contradicted the very principles she was entrusted to uphold.

Throughout the trial, Katanga maintained her innocence, asserting that she used personal income, savings, and loans to finance the bus purchases. However, the prosecution presented evidence suggesting otherwise, including discrepancies between her income and expenditures. The magistrate found her defense lacking, highlighting the absence of funds transfers from her accounts to the bus manufacturer, Higer.

As Katanga was led away to begin her sentence, her relatives wept, and her lawyers vowed to appeal the verdict, deeming it excessively harsh. Despite the legal proceedings, Katanga maintained her composure, offering a stoic wave to journalists as she departed.

The much-anticipated construction of the Lusaka-Ndola dual carriageway continues to face delays in funding, sparking growing concerns among the public.
