Esther Lungu Gets New Mattress and Beddings in Police Cell
In less than 24hrs, Esther Lungu, the former first lady of Zambia and the wife of ex-president Edgar Lungu, has been given a new mattress and beddings in her police cell, where she is being detained on four counts of theft.
She is accused of stealing motor vehicles and a title deed from two women, Elizabeth Chanje Phiri and Hannah Patel, between May 2022 and September 2022, when her husband was still in power.
She was arrested on September 6, 2023, after being interrogated by the police in May this year. She is being held at Ibex Police Station, together with four other suspects who are alleged to be her accomplices.
The police have not disclosed the reason behind the thefts or the value of the stolen items.
The arrest of Esther Lungu has sparked mixed reactions among Zambians, who have witnessed a peaceful transition of power from Edgar Lungu to Hakainde Hichilema, who won the presidential election in August this year. Hichilema has vowed to fight corruption and uphold the rule of law in the country.
