"MCD Takes Action to Revoke Non-Compliant Mining Rights"
In a significant move, the Mining Cadastre Department (MCD) has undertaken measures to open up opportunities for regular Zambians to seek mining rights. This initiative follows the revocation of numerous licenses held by companies that were found to be non-compliant and in default.
Over the period spanning July to August 2023, the MCD has successfully revoked a total of 89 licenses that had been previously granted but were not upheld due to non-payment. Concurrently, the department has upheld its decision to deny 72 licenses that failed to overturn their initial rejection through the appeal process. The cumulative outcome of these actions accounts for the rejection of 161 licenses. This strategic maneuver now paves the way for the submission and operation of legitimate Mining Right Applications.
The licenses that have undergone cancellation are now being reintroduced into the pool of available licenses, allowing ordinary Zambian citizens to apply for them. Furthermore, the MCD has identified a larger pool of 2165 licenses held by non-compliant entities, which are currently under scrutiny and at risk of impending revocation.
This proactive stance underscores the MCD's commitment to maintaining the integrity of the mining sector. Interestingly, these recent developments have prompted a response from the mining cartel whose licenses were invalidated. They appear to be engaged in a campaign aimed at tarnishing the reputation of the department and misleading the public through the dissemination of malicious content. Such efforts, however, cannot overshadow the department's dedication to ensuring a fair and compliant mining environment for the benefit of the nation and its citizens.
