"FDD President Edith Nawakwi Arrested and Charged with Abduction Offense"

Edith Nawakwi, the president of the Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD), has been taken into custody and formally charged in connection with an abduction case. Confirming this development, Deputy Spokesperson for the police, Danny Mwale, released a statement outlining the details of Ms. Nawakwi's arrest, which took place at the age of 63 in the Roma Township of Lusaka.

Mwale elaborated, stating, "The Lusaka Police have filed charges against Edith Nawakwi, aged 63, of Roma Township in Lusaka, for the crime of abduction as stipulated in sections 253 and 256 of chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia." The facts of the case, as presented by Mwale, indicate that Nawakwi, along with unidentified accomplices, is alleged to have coerced individuals named Pheluna Hatembo and Milton Hatembo into unlawful confinement at different lodges in Lusaka. This act followed a deceptive promise of assistance.

Mwale further explained, "She induced them to travel from Choma to Lusaka." During the period of their confinement, the victims were purportedly denied their freedom of movement, communication, and autonomy, all subject to Nawakwi's control and authority. The alleged incident transpired between September 2020 and January 2021, within the confines of Lusaka.

As part of the ongoing legal proceedings, Mwale stated that Edith Nawakwi has been released on police bond, pending her scheduled appearance in court. The situation has raised significant attention and will undoubtedly be a subject of public scrutiny as it unfolds.
