"Absa Bank's Remarkable Contribution to Annual Marathon: Promoting Fitness and Gender Equality"

In a resounding commitment to fostering athleticism and enhancing fitness in Zambia, Absa Bank has proudly announced a substantial investment of five million kwacha in this year's upcoming marathon event. Scheduled to unfold at the Lusaka Showground on August 26th, 2023, the marathon stands as a testament to Absa Bank's enduring dedication to the promotion of physical well-being.

Mizinga Melu, the Chief Executive Officer of Absa Bank, articulated the profound significance of the marathon as a means to elevate the world of athletics and fitness within Zambia. Speaking during a press briefing in Lusaka, she acknowledged the collective efforts that have driven the marathon's growth and success over the past five years, acknowledging the pivotal contributions of partners such as Lusaka, Fitness Squad, and Trade Kings.

As anticipation builds for the event, Ms. Melu elaborated on the expected participation, estimating over four thousand runners across various categories. The announcement of the top prize for the marathon further amplifies the excitement – a commendable forty-five thousand kwacha in the forty-two-kilometer category. This significant award will be granted to both male and female champions, underlining Absa Bank's commitment to advancing gender equality within the realm of sports.

Determined to continually invigorate the marathon's significance, Absa Bank introduces an additional incentive this year. A bonus of fifteen thousand kwacha awaits any victorious runner who achieves a groundbreaking accomplishment. The marathon is expected to draw around 800 virtual participants and an impressive 3,200 runners for the physical event, further demonstrating its expanding influence and appeal.

Elias Mpondela, President of Zambia Athletics (ZA), conveyed his sentiments through a speech delivered by Committee Member Godwin Chenda. Mpondela appealed to the marathon's sponsors to consider enhancing the event by introducing bronze, silver, and gold medals, with the aim of attracting international participants. He extended an important message to the cooperating partners, urging them to offer employment opportunities to athletes, many of whom hail from underprivileged backgrounds.

The news of the marathon meeting international standards garnered special attention. Mpondela acknowledged that the Absa Marathon is the sole event in Zambia that has fulfilled these standards, positioning it as a contender for grading by the esteemed World Athletic Association.

As the countdown to the marathon intensifies, Absa Bank's investment not only exemplifies corporate social responsibility but also signifies the fostering of unity, health, and gender parity through the powerful platform of sports. With Absa Bank's pioneering dedication and the synergy of partners, the marathon is poised to yet again make history, showcasing the resilience and determination of Zambia's athletic community on the world stage.
